Why tumblr’s attitude towards disability is detrimental to those living with disabilities.

dark-sexy-metal:

This is something I’ve been wanting to write since I came back to tumblr in December, but couldn’t figure out a good way to put until now. Before anyone screams at me for being an able-bodied ableist, I’m going to put it out there that I’ve had a diagnosed muscular condition, and diagnosed anxiety disorder for most of my life (this is something I shouldn’t have to put as a disclaimer but I digress)

When I first got a tumblr account in 2011, my anxiety was the worst it ever was. I had a guy stalking me, a girl trying to get me to introduce her to my friends cause of their race, and my father filing court cases against my mother because I wouldn’t go to his wedding (which he planned for a day I had a required band concert) When my anxiety gets worse, I have more muscular problems. The disorder I have is called dyspraxia, and it’s basically a brain condition where your brain has trouble sending signals to your muscles. Because of that it can cause coordination problems, bad handwriting, difficulty in sports, difficulty walking, etc.

I would often talk to people on here that year about how they deal with things so they can go along with their normal daily routine. People would give advice on how they overcome their disability issues, and would be friendly and helpful. (For me, music really helped me with my coordination. Learning woodwinds helped with the small motor, and marching band helped with the gross motor.)

Somehow, the community changed into a blob of lazy human sludge that just wants people to feel bad for them and cater towards their every whim. (Which frankly, is really bad for you) Most disability tags no longer have things to help you, It’s just people complaining about how everyone should treat them special cause they have problems.

When you do that, you get yourself into a bad rut that’s very hard to get out of. (I should know, I didn’t go to the gym for two months and let my muscle tone drop so low that I started to trip and get “tangled”, as my mother calls it, when I walked again. It was hard to get back into a routine, but my legs were really bruised from falling and I had to)

If you do have a problem, you really should try to seek out some sort of treatment. (for me, I had physical/occupational therapy throughout elementary and middle school, which was provided by the city cause I was in public school) A lot of cities have public programs for disability assistance that can go even past school years.

I know that if you have a disability, you can never be completely “normal” and able to do all things that someone who’s able-bodied is capable of (I will always have coordination problems and probably will never be able to ride a bike), but it does a lot better to try rather than wallow in self pity and give up. Instead of letting your disability hold you back, try to work past it. Remember, Daniel Radcliffe still has trouble tying his shoelaces because of dyspraxia too, yet was the lead in the one of the highest grossing movie franchises

I hate it when anti-feminists bring the argument ”You are complaining about your condition while Muslim women in Afghanistan are being killed every day and can’t even go to school!” Oh, yes, let me, as a white feminist, leave everything behind myself and travel to other countries and start lecturing everyone about how they should treat women and attack directly different and complex cultures I could never grasp completely! Or maybe, maybe, you could realise Western interventions in Afghanistan only made things worse and this isn’t about ”good” Westerners against ”bad” Jihadists and that none of them represent the real people who live there, and maybe you could also realise Muslim women have a voice and are not defenseless and constantly oppressed children, but that you simply refuse to listen to them. And maybe you could also drop this dumb argument and focus on how women are treated in this country, simply because you refuse to admit not everything is perfect and idyllic in the West and to open your eyes and see women are constantly oppressed in so-called civilised countries, especially trans women, women of color, Muslim women and queer women, thus why you are trying to change the subject and talk about something entirely different and unrelated.

The goal of #SmallPetRespect is to encourage current and potential owners of small pets to become more educated on the animals they care for.

By tweeting facts and advice, we’ll destroy some of the myths and misconceptions surrounding the smallest of our companions.

When it comes to animals like birds (particularly budgies and cockatiels), small mammals, rodents, reptiles, fish (bettas need special mention), amphibians, arachnids, etc, many are picked up on a whim without proper prior research. Many of these animals are cheaply obtained at chain pet stores.

To make matters worse, many enclosures, tanks, cages, and habitats sold in pet stores are not suitable for the animals they are marketed for.

Many animals wind up mistreated due to ignorance and a prevailing attitude that such pets are disposable. It’s time to change that.

Do you share your home with a small pet? What would you say to someone looking into owning one? You can join the conversation on Twitter and Tumblr by tagging #SmallPetRespect.

Share stories, wisdom learned, facts, resources, advice and more. Please signal boost! Help us show that though they are small, all pets deserve respect.

So I saw this cute girl going down the street with an amazing ass. I was all “DAMN GIRL, YOU GOT AN AMAZING ASS.” She was like “thanks, there’s a sale across the block, I got him there.” Now I have a pet donkey too, he was five bucks and his name is Leopold. And he hates thunderstorms.

Why aren’t we doing this in all 50 states??

Oregon State has an online course called HAVEN that incoming freshmen need to take before coming in the fall or they will have a hold on their account. HAVEN is about sexual assault, abuse, and healthy relationships.

edit: this is either satire or downright untrue. no good source. can’t believe I didn’t look for a source on something so important… oh well
